Making a Home More Comfortable in South Windsor, CT
Challenge
This homeowner in South Windsor, CT called us out to his home to help make the new addition to the home more comfortable and energy efficient. When we got to the home, we noticed that the new addition was under a large crawl space. Crawlspaces are very dry and cold in the winter and very hot and humid and can make the spaces above this area very cold and hot depending on the outside temperature. This is the main reason this new addition was uncomfortable for the homeowners.
Solution
To fix this problem, we start by doing the unpleasant task of removing the nasty old insulation and cleaning out the crawlspace of all debris. Then, we start to lay down our drainage mat. This will let any moisture that gets in the crawlspace properly evaporate without affecting the living space. Then, we put our 2" silverglo EPS foam board on the wall. This will stop any outdoor elements from conducting through the concrete and affecting the living space. Next thing to do is install our terra-block insulation board on the floor for some much needed r-value. Once we have that done we lay out our 20 mil thick vapor barrier. This will be the last defense against anything that will affect the living space. To completely seal the crawlspace, the last thing to do is spray foam the rim joist. This area of the home lets in a lot of outdoor elements into the space and also will help make the living space above be more comfortable and energy efficient. Now that this area of the home is completed, the living space above will be way more comfortable and energy efficient for these homeowners!
