Inconsistent Room Temperature in Enfield, CT
Challenge
These homeowners in Enfield, CT were frustrated with the temperature fluctuation in their home. Once our Building Science Specialist conducted their energy evaluation, it was clear that they needed a better insulation solution!
Over time, insulation can lose its effectiveness. A homeowner may not be aware of the problems that lurk after years of insulation deterioration including causes from insect and animal traffic. The biggest evidence of a problem is when the living space becomes uncomfortable. Homeowners will notice drafts in the winter and trouble cooling rooms in the summer. This is a direct result of extreme attic temperatures and poor insulation.
During the summer months, temperatures can reach up to 125 degrees in the attic. This heat will radiate down into your living space causing uncomfortable temperatures. The air conditioner works harder and the cost to adjust the room temperature comes right out of your budget. In the winter, it’s the opposite. The cold weather comes in from the outside through the attic and causes drafts around the house. The furnace works harder to normalize the room temperature. Our homeowners knew something was wrong and called to learn more about their home and how to fix the problem.
Solution
Before we could start the larger SuperAttic project, we wrapped the chimney with Rock Wool Chimney Wrap. The material is non-combustible fireproof mineral fiber followed by SilverGlo insulation for additional protection. Surprisingly, the chimney is one of the areas where drafts can cause airflow issues. But our materials provide a superior protection against extreme temperatures.
Next, we addressed the larger attic space. We continue adding the SilverGlo EPS foam insulation board with graphite on the underside of the roof. The graphite increases the R value and the foil face on both sides reflects the heat and cold throughout the year. There is no need to use any additional spray foam insulation which can bring unnecessary chemicals into the home. The attic space is now stable, less dust and can be used for additional storage items.
Thanks to Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, this home is now more comfortable, dust free and more energy efficient!
