Insulating an Underdeveloped Home in Sturbridge, MA
Challenge
Problem:
This home in Sturbridge, MA was being built and the homeowner wanted to ensure that their home was fully and properly insulated before the home was finished building. This home has skylights and central air ducts. These are all areas that should be insulated around. The skylight is causing heat to be radiated into the home. And the owner will be blasting the A/C through the summer. So The heat from the skylight and the A/C duct will be battling out the whole time. But if you Insulate both areas heat will stay out in the summer and this homeowner will not have to turn up their A/C that high and save money.
Solution
Solution:
Our team got to discussing the best possible solution. They came up with it and talked it over with the homeowner before pursuing the job. The homeowner agreed and the team went to work. The first problem to be fixed was the skylight. The skylight needed to be properly insulated or rooms would get overheated in the summertime. This led to us putting in an insert made up of two panes of high-performance glass installed near the bottom of the skylight tunnel. This glass has a special metal coating that allows most of the visible light through but reflects most of the heat. With that done rooms can now be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The next thing to be installed was insulation on an exterior wall that was exposed to an attic. We used SilverGlo polystyrene foam insulation boars that are infused with graphite and that gives it a 25% higher insulation value per inch than standard EPS foam, Leading to more comfortable rooms and lower fuel and electric bills.
