Super Attic in Westfield, MA
Challenge
These homeowners called us to help make their home more comfortable. They experienced inconsistent temperatures throughout the house, especially on the second floor. Reducing heating and cooling costs was also a priority. The attic had minimal fiberglass insulation and no air sealing. Our trained Building Science Specialist knew what to do.
Solution
Air sealing is critical in an attic. All penetrations and gaps must be sealed to prevent heated and cooled air from escaping into the attic. Our team started by air sealing all penetrations to stop the air leakage. The homeowners wanted to use their attic for storage. We installed our SuperAttic Advanced Conversion System to make this possible.
Instead of creating a traditional thermal boundary on the floor of the attic, we created a thermal boundary at the roof of the attic. A thermal boundary is what separates the conditioned space of a home from the unconditioned space. We installed our SilverGlo EPS foam insulation board on the ceiling rafters. SilverGlo is infused with graphite which increases its R-value. SilverGlo has a radiant barrier on the face to reflect heat which adds to the insulation value. The attic is now part of the conditioned space and ready to use for storage. The homeowner saw a drastic change right away and is thrilled with how comfortable the home is.
