Photo Album: Reducing Drafts in East Longmeadow, MA
This homeowner in Longmeadow, MA came to us with concerns about drafts in the home. With our free evaluation we found that there were air leaks between the conditioned space inside the home and the attic, as well as an uninsulated rim joist. For every cubic foot of air going up through the top of the home, a cubic foot of outside air was being pulled in from the bottom.
We began with insulating the rim joist to seal the bottom. We then moved to the attic and removed the old insulation to be able to get to air leaks to seal and later blow in our own TruSoft cellulose. There was a whole house fan as well as the pull down stairs up to the attic creating large spaces for air to leak through. We sealed off the whole house fan and created a removable cover for the stairs. Since we added a removal top to the whole house fan cover, we created a dammed catwalk for the cover to safely be accessed without wading through cellulose.
With the help of Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, this home is more comfortable and draft free!
Before
The old, ineffective insulation right before we removed it. The whole house fan us also visible.
Clean Attic and Baffles
The attic is now clean. Baffles were installed into place with spray foam. The baffles with keep air flow from the soffit vents unobstructed
Rim Joist
The rim joist is insulated to stop air leaks at the bottom of the home.
Fan Cover and Cat Walk
If you look closely, you can see where a square was cut out of the top of the whole house fan cover to be removal in case they wish to use it again. The dams are ready for insulation to be blown right up against the catwalk without getting buried.
TruSoft Cellulose
Our insulation is blown in to the optimal insulation value.
