Super, $uperattic in Sturbridge, MA

Challenge

This homeowner in Sturbridge, MA wanted to upgrade the insulation and air sealing in their home, they felt their walls being very cold among wanting to increase energy efficiency. This is a large home, with a large- multi room attic! We sent our Building Science Specialist to their home to conduct a Free Home Energy Evaluation to get to the root of their concern, help increase their home efficiency and comfort! Vented attics are very hostile places. In the winter they can get down to -30° and if your home is not properly air sealed and insulated, that air can enter your home, that you are paying to heat! Not only that, but that heated air is able to escape the home! Each time a cubic foot of air escapes your home, one cubic foot of air enters your home from the bottom, forcing you to reheat that same air over and over. This can lead to extremely high energy bills, and heat loss in your home. 

Solution

We knew that this customer and their home would benefit from our $uperattic treatment in this section of their attic. But first, we needed to remove all of the old insulation in some spaces, bag it up, and properly dispose of the material. Some spaces had no insulation to start with! Once there was no insulation in the attic, we got our treatment started! First, we install our SilverGlo EPS foam insulation board on the underside of the roof deck. SilverGlo is a patented material and is infused with graphite to increase the R-Value (insulation value). Since it has foil facing sides it reflects heat out in the summer, and back in during the winter! 

We seal any gaps between the boards with foam! 

Now, we get to the other section of the attic with our traditional attic treatment. Since all the old insulation has been removed, we can get right to air sealing up any gaps and penetrations where air is able to pass through. Now, we can blow our TruSoft Cellulose insulation into this attic, it fills all gaps and odd shaped voids!
