Attic Insulation Photo Album: Air Sealing a Chimney in Watertown, CT
This homeowner was experiencing a problem with ice damming. Ice dams occur when warm air leaks from the living space into the attic. This warm air melts the snow which refreezes at the colder edge of the roof and ice dams form. Our team air sealed and insulated this attic to prevent this problem.
We needed to air seal the gaps around the chimney. Building codes require that combustible materials cannot be within 2 inches of a chimney. First, our team flashed the space around the chimney with metal and air sealed it with our high temperature fire caulk. We then wrapped the chimney with our fireproof "Rock Wool" insulation panels. This eliminates the gap surrounding the chimney.
