Attic Insulation Photo Album: Drafty Attic with Rodents in Windsor, CT
This homeowner in Windsor, CT had had a rodent infestation and were now ready to remove the insulation that had been soiled. Upon conducting our free home evaluation, we realized that rat droppings were not the only issue in the attic. There were many air leaks hiding under the old insulation, allowing air that the homeowner was paying to heat and cool to get pulled up and out of the attic, raising energy costs.
We pulled out all of the old fiberglass insulation and cleaned up the droppings and any remaining pieces of insulation out with a vacuum. We then began sealing any cracks and crevices with spray foam. There was a whole house fan in the attic that was letting a lot of air through. Whole house fans may have been useful in the past, but were made nearly obsolete with advancements in cooling systems. We used our special David Lewis whole house fan cover over it and sealed that with spray foam as well. Once any air leaks were sealed, we installed baffles to ensure that ventilation in the attics was not blocked once we blew in our Tru-soft cellulose insulation. We made a deck with a dam to keep the whole house fan accessible in the future should the homeowner want to use it again. Lastly, we blew in our TruSoft insulation to stop the transfer of heat.

Before
At a first glance, it is already noticeable that this insulation is soiled an inefficient.
Baffles
The baffles installed on the underside of the roof allow for air to flow in through the soffit without getting blocked up with cellulose.
Decking
We installed this decking and dam to keep the whole house fan accessible in the future.
Fan Cover
Here is the David Lewis Whole House Fan Cover. It is made of our SilverGlo graphite infused foam insulation board. SilverGlo has a radiant barrier facing that helps it reflect heat!
Gaps and droppings
Here you can clearly see the dropping as well as joints and around the electrical work entirely lacking air sealing.
Removal
Here you can see as we filled large bags with the fiberglass batting to get that out first.
After
TuSoft cellulose ins blow up against the dam we built. TruSoft is treated to be pest resistant.
