Updating Insulation in Groton, CT
Challenge
This homeowner in Groton, CT Called us out to their home to update their crawlspace insulation. When we got to the home, our Building Science Specialist investigated their crawlspace and discovered very old, nasty fiberglass insulation and debris down there, that was effecting their home negatively.
Vented crawlspaces like this one not only let in cold air in the winter, but also humid air in the summer, which condenses once it is cooled by the underground portion of the crawlspace. Once this moisture brings the humidity up to 75%, mold can begin to form!
We knew what we needed to do to help this homeowner.
Solution
We started by removing all of the old fiberglass insulation and debris in the crawlspace. Now we can get to work! We installed our SilverGlo graphite infused EPS foam board onto the walls. Not only does the graphite bring the insulation value up, but SilverGlo also has a radiant barrier face to bump up its effectiveness even more. Now, we lay down dimpled drainage matting to create space for airflow and a thermal break. TerraBlock floor insulation is then installed over the matting. Finally, we install an anti-microbial 20 mil vapor barrier with fasteners and heavy duty tape made just for crawlspaces.
Now this crawlspace is updated, healthier, and energy efficient!
