Making a Home More Efficient in North Adams, MA

Challenge

This home owner in North Adams, MA called us out to his home to see what we could do to make it more energy efficient. When we got to the home, our building science specialist noticed that the attic was poorly insulated. This was was they were spending a lot of money on there energy bills. The air that you pay to condition was making its way into the attic and escaping forever.

Solution

To fix this issue we had to properly air seal and insulated the attic space. The first thing we did was remove all the old fiberglass. Then, we have to air seal the entire attic. Making sure we get every top plate, end plate and penetration. This home owner wanted to use their attic for storage. To satisfy this concern we build a super deck. First thing we do is lay out our Silverglo insulation board on the joist. Then we lay down plywood on top of the foam board and secure it to the joist. To finish up this attic we have to blow our Trusoft Cellulose to an R-value of R-60. This is the recommended R-value for New England from the department of energy.
