Through our free energy evaluation, we found that not only was insulation lacking, but there were many spaces and leaks allowing air that they were paying to heat to escape into the attic and out through the vents.
Attics need to be vented in order to keep moisture from being trapped and to avoid ice damming by keeping the roof temperature regulated. The problem lies in that the conditioned space of the home, essentially the inside of the home, is often not well sealed from the attic that is not conditioned, essentially the outside of the home. Warm air from inside escapes through the attic, and for every cubic foot of warm air escaping through the top of the home, one cubic foot of cold outside air is pulled in from leaks towards the bottom of the house. One large air leak was the attic hatch pull down stairs. We still want to keep the attic accessible for maintenance to be done on the heating and cooling system as needed, but stop the flow of air.
Our solution was our David Lewis Hatch Cover. The cover is made of SilverGlo graphite infused insulation foam board which has a radiant barrier facing to keep heat from coming out of the home in the winter and keep heat from the attic out during the summer. The cover has a handle on the inside so that it is easy to place and remove when entering and exiting the attic. The cover is also not visible from the inside of the home while in use.
