Insulating Crawl Space in Pittsfield, MA to keep prevent drafts and cold floors above.
These homeowners in Winsted, CT had cold air and humidity getting into their crawlspace and moving up into their home. Crawl spaces were previously considered to not be part of the conditioned space of a home and thus were vented and no effort was put into keeping outside air out. We now know that to have a comfortable and mold free home, the crawl space must be sealed. The access door to this crawlspace was loose fitting and uninsulated, causing air leaks and letting in moisture.
We removed the old doors and replaced them with our Everlast Crawl Space Doors with a few modifications to fit the larger frame. The doors are made of 1/2" polyethylene with weather stripping to keep the door airtight. We added our SilverGlo EPS foam board to the inside as well to add insulation value and keep heat in the home in the winter and out in the summer.
Thanks to Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, there is still easy access to the crawlspace but cold air and moisture are staying out!
This homeowner in Sandisfield, MA called us looking for new insulation in his home. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived, he noted that the home's crawlspace was insulated on the ceiling using foam insulation board, but it was not encapsulated. The dirt crawlspace was being used for storage, and was at risk of having water leaks.
We were able to help this homeowner by re-insulating and encapsulating the crawl space. We first ensured that all of the old insulation was out. After performing other treatments such as insulating the rim joist using our two part expanding spray foam, we got to work installing our SilverGlo™ wall insulation. SilverGlo™ has graphite infused into the foam to increaase the R-value by 24% over standard foam. We then followed by laying down our dimpled drainage mat. After that, we started installing TerraBlock floor insulation, before pausing to fully install the SuperSump™ sump pump, which is a different solution we offer for crawlspaces and basements. We ensured that the TerraBlock went right around it to prevent gaps in the insulation. After that is finished, we installed our CleanSpace™ encapsulation liner. This waterproof liner also features Ultrafresh™ anti-microbial ingredients. This homeowner now has a well insulated and clean crawlspace where he can store his valuables. This crawlspace now will prevent moisture damage and mold that could have grown in the home.
Vented Crawl Space Insulation using SilverGlo to prevent humidity and lower fuel and electric bills.
This homeowner in Becket, MA called us hoping that we would be able to help him with his home. He had a three-season cabin that he was hoping to turn into his year-round home. Some homes or additions are designed with floors that have the outside air under them. Other times a home or addition was originally used as a summer home or “three season room”, and was converted to all season heated space later. When the outside air flows under a floor it feels very cold and uncomfortable in the winter - especially with ceramic tile, linoleum or laminate floors. Since the floor is the surface of the room we are in contact with most, it’s very important to fix, in order to be comfortable. There are two issues - air leakage through the floor, and conductive heat loss through the floor, because heat moves from more to less through solid materials. Even if there is fiberglass batt insulation in the floor, because it sags down away from the sub floor, the same outside air gets over it (“thermal bypass”) rendering it useless. Mold on the floor joists and sub floor is also a concern. Results - cold floors, drafts, uncomfortable rooms, greater overall home air leakage rate, higher fuel and electric bills.
We had the perfect solution for this customer. In this solution, SilverGlo™ foam insulation board is installed across the bottom of the floor joists with special long screws and 3” washers, SilverGlo™ is expanded polystyrene foam with graphite infused into the foam, which bumps up the insulation (“R”) value by 24% over standard EPS foam. Further, SilverGlo™ has a radiant barrier to reflect heat, so the insulation isn’t doing all the work by itself. All seams are sealed. If necessary a skirt board can be installed around the perimeter of the insulation so the edge is not visible. The skirt board may require painting after we are complete. Result - Much warmer floors, less drafts and more comfortable rooms, quieter home, lower fuel and electric bills.
