Encapsulating a Crawl Space in Unionville, CT

This homeowner in Unionville, CT called us hoping that we would be able to take a look at his insulation. He was experiencing a lot of issues with rooms that were uneven temperatures. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived in the home, he noted that one issue in the home was the crawlspace. It was poorly insulated and unencapsulated, meaning that cold air was coming in from outside and traveling through the entire house.

We were able to help this homeowner by utilizing our CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation system - with a few modifications for the home itself.

We started by utilizing our two-part expanding spray foam to insulate around the base of the (now unused) chimney that is in the crawl space. Then, we got to work. We started by adding SilverGlo™ foam board insulation on the walls. SilverGlo™ has graphite infused into the foam, increasing its R-value by 24% over standard foam. Then, we added two-part expanding spray foam to the rim joist and over the sill plate until it met the SilverGlo™, forming a barrier. Then, we laid out dimpled drainage mat on the floor, creating airspace as well as a thermal break. Dimpled drainage mat also has the bonus of forcing any water that may occur under the mat to go to the lowest point of the crawl space. We then added TerraBlock™ floor insulation over top of that. After that, we installed our heavy duty CleanSpace™ encapsulation liner, sealing it to the walls and floors.

Now, this homeowner's crawl space is insulated and encapsulated -- causing the home to have less drafts and cold floors. They are much more happy!

Making a Room More Comfortable in Blandford, MA

This home owner in Blandford, MA called to see if we could help make a room more comfortable throughout the year. He wanted to focus on an old dirt crawlspace. The room above this crawlspace was notoriously really cold in the winter and super hot and humid in the summer.

To fix the problem, we had to encapsulate the crawl space. We removed all the old fiberglass insulation and added our 2" Silverglow foam board to the side walls. We laid down our dimple drainage mat and over-laid the Terr-block insulation foam board for additional support. We installed our Cleanspace 20 mil thick vapor barrier on the floors and walls. Our last step was to spray foam the rim joist so that the entire area is secured from the outside elements.

Now that Dr Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions completed this project, this homeowner's room will stay more comfortable year round!

Removal of Old Sagging Insulation from Crawl Space in Westfield, MA

The old thinking in crawl space construction was to vent the crawl space and create the thermal boundary (insulation layer) at the crawl space ceiling. It doesn’t work. Insulation is pulled by gravity away from the sub floor you’re supposed to be insulating. The same cold air under the insulation flows into the space on top of it - rendering the insulation useless. As the insulation gets heavier with moisture content, it falls away from the sub floor even more and can even fall to the floor. Fiberglass batt insulation has paper facing and organic material in the resin used to set the fibers into a batt - both are mold food. Results - mold, smelly insulation that is not providing any insulation value and has sagged or even fallen.

Dr. Energy Saver® will remove existing fiberglass batts from your crawl space. It’s not fun laying on your back in a tight (dirt) crawl space. Insulation has hostile fibers when it’s disturbed. The insulation is very bulky and takes up a tremendous amount of space in trucks and our dumpsters which must be emptied. But it’s necessary to have a healthy home in the end. Result - now your crawl space is ready to be fixed properly with other Dr. Energy Saver solutions. The thermal boundary will likely be moved to the crawl space walls and vents eliminated. No more nasty fiberglass
